Tattoos date back thousands of years. Their origins are in native cultures around the world who used body art to symbolize skills, status and family or tribal group. Men and women alike had colorful markings for beautification or more darker purposes, including during tribal warfare to intimidate the enemy. In more modern times the reasons for having tattoos have not actually changed very much. However, the methods of tattoo removal have changed dramatically. Very early tattoo removal simply involved letting it fade naturally because the inks were made from organic substances and they needed touching up periodically to remain visible. Interestingly, research has been conducted into a modern version of this traditional tattoo removal by using special creams that can be applied to the tattoo to speed up the fade process of the more permanent inks that are used for tattoos today. Some of these tattoo removal creams have proved to be very effective although they are obviously not the fastest of the tattoo removal methods available. Whatever the reason that a person had for having a tattoo originally they usually thought that they were marked for life. Specialized tattoo removal was relatively unheard of. This could cause problems, especially in later life. Many people loved their skin art when they first had it done, but as they grew older it seemed either less attractive, in the case of basic artwork, or no longer appropriate, especially if it had been used to signify gang membership. Changing jobs might also prove more difficult as some employers frown upon visible tattoos in the workplace. Even if the tattoo is in a relatively discreet place, changing fashions and attitudes mean that more and more people are looking for the best tattoo removal options. Nowadays, there are a number of methods of tattoo removal that a trained specialist can use. His choice is influenced by the age, size and location of the tattoo. Tattoo removal using laser surgery is the newest and most effective method. A number of treatment sessions are needed and so it is the lengthiest form of tattoo removal, but it is the least painful and produces the best results aesthetically. After the skin has been numbed, the laser is aimed at the tattoo. As the light pulses onto the color pigment of the tattoo it begins to break up. The body’s natural defenses work to remove these areas between treatments. Due to the length of time that a course of laser tattoo removal can take, small tattoos are often best removed by cutting out, or excising, the picture. The edges of the area are then stitched together. If the tattoo is fairly large then a skin graft may be used to cover the area. Scarring can occur in varying degrees depending on the size of the tattoo removed and the healing ability of the patient. This can be the deciding factor in a person’s decision to opt for another form of tattoo removal. Dermabrasion is not quite as drastic as excision as it involves sanding the tattooed area using a specialized instrument. The skin, and tattoo, then simply flakes off. It is essential that any person contemplating undergoing a tattoo removal is given all of the available information to enable them to choose the method that will suit them best.
